Cleaning and maintenance tips for ESD floors

ESD floors require regular cleaning and maintenance for their continuous electrical performance. Even a thin layer of dirt on the ESD floor may act as an insulator which will prevent static from dissipating to the ground in a proper manner. Usually, the regular procedure of cleaning the ESD flooring is quite similar to the maintenance procedure of regular floors. However, different kinds of floors have slightly different maintenance needs, and ESD mats are no exceptions. Proper maintenance can significantly impact the overall performance and life-span of the floor.

Different ESD floors require a different level of care

  • ESD Vinyl products are considered as an economical, efficient and durable static control options. Also, they require regular waxing and buffing to maintain their conductive properties. Some of the Vinyl tiles like SDT don’t come with a warranty unless the customer reapplies the regular coats of antistatic floor polish regularly.
  • The ESD rubber types of flooring are comparatively easier to clean. They only require general routine maintenance like regular floors. The maintenance routine of ESD carpet and rubber floors includes vacuuming and steam cleaning for the carpet. If you have a rubber ESD, then you can wash the floor with a wet mop. The best thing about rubber ESDs is that unless their maintenance is wholly neglected, their performance will not die down.
  • The cleaning methodology of ESD Epoxy floors is slightly different than its rubber counterpart. Epoxy floors are generally used as areas which require the use of forklifts or any other heavy equipment. These floors are easy to clean, but they need regular washing. Also, the regular rolling of chair casters damages the epoxy, and the original shining appearance of the floor cannot be restored by buffing. However, the ESD Epoxy floors are notorious for being extremely difficult to repair when damaged. Some of the Epoxy variants are also sensitive to the UV radiation, which leads to the softening and fading of the colour in well-lit regions. It may further get difficult for you to install a new Epoxy floor with matching colours.
  • For ESD carpet tiles, periodic vacuuming and yearly wet or dry extractions are required. The carpet fibre modification ratio determines the carpet performance. Lower the CFM ratio better will be the performance of the ESD carpet. For example, an ESD carpet with a modification ratio below 2.5 will perform quite well in areas with severe traffic. Their maintenance is not that complicated, but the ESD mats are prone to solder and chemical spills.

For keeping your factory floor shining and glazing, it is recommended to polish the floor with floor maintainer and a white pad. ESD polymer coatings can also be used to seal and streamline the maintenance of the ESD floors in a better way.

If you want your ESD floor to stay intact for a long time, you should consider daily sweeping and damp mopping the floor with a specialized ESD floor cleaner. These two things are enough to keep your floor shining and performance-ready.
